If you are planning some hair removal this summer and your chosen method is waxing, there are several important factors to consider when planning an appointment before your holidays or event.

Waxing is not just about hair removal.  It is also about preparing your skin to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. Neglecting these factors can lead to discomfort or unsatisfactory results. Understanding the nuances of waxing, including skin type, hair growth cycles, and pre-treatment care, is crucial to achieving a flawless finish.

Preparation is key for any hair removal or waxing treatment. Summer tends to be one of the busiest times of the year, so it is always best to plan ahead and book your appointments in advance. Ensuring you get your preferred time slot allows for proper skin preparation.

Preparing your skin in the days leading up to your appointment can have an impact on the effectiveness of your treatment.

Hair regrowth is essential. For the best results, allow at least two weeks from shaving or using hair removal creams before your waxing appointment. Regrowth needs to be of a certain length for the wax to stick to the hairs properly. If you are regular to waxing, a gap of 4-6 weeks between sessions is recommended for optimal results. This gives your skin time to recover and your hair the chance to grow to the appropriate length.

Hair removal in the summer

Before your appointment it is essential to make sure that your skin is in the best condition as this will ensure better results.

Preparing your skin for hair removal in the summer

  • Exfoliation: Removing dead skin helps to lift dead skin cells from the skin.  It also helps to lift up any hair that may be trapped between your dead skin cells.
  • Moisturise:  Hydrating your skin is important, this can help to reduce skin lifting.  Lifting particularly with strip wax can occur with dry skin or more mature skin types.
  • Stop using actives: Active ingredients such a retinol can thin the skin, making it more prone to grazing/lifting.  For best results, stop using all retinol based products at least 1 week before on any areas to be treated.
  • Treat Ingrown Hairs: Intimate areas such as the bikini can be prone to ingrown hairs.  Using products containing salicylic acid help to extract the oils and hairs trapped from within the follicle – Want to find out more about salicylic? Read our post about it here.

What to do after hair removal

  • Avoid heat exposure and exercise:  Following your appointment avoid exercise, sun exposure or any activity that will heat the waxed area for at least 24 hours.
  • Exfoliate:  Wait 48 hours after hair removal before using any exfoliation products on your skin.  Abrasive products may result in skin irritation.
  • Treat the area: Using ingredients such as salicylic acid in your skin wash or as a serum applied directly onto your skin will help to unblock your pores and prevent ingrown hairs and prevent the appearance of Keratosis Pilaris which resembles chicken skin.  To help fix this,  we recommend Aunt Mary- Click here to buy yours
